IMPORTANT ANNUAL MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
After nearly 30 years of being a driving force in the Ithaca community for equality and social justice for the LGBT community, the Ithaca LGBT Task Force is considering its options for the future. We have come a long way since our founding in 1985, when we were formed around the cause to pass what was then called "Local Law C" which added the prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation to Tompkins County's Fair Practices Act. More recently, the Ithaca LGBT Task Force was an instrumental part of the push and eventual win for marriage equality in New York, which finally became law in June 2011.
Much has changed in society's acceptance of the LGBT community, and the recognition of basic rights and equal treatment to those in our community. Communication surrounding our advocacy and activities has also changed, from monthly printed and mailed newsletters to an email list and Facebook posts. We are fortunate to live in an area where many other organizations are working with and for the LGBT community either specifically or just simply as a recognition of our contributions to the greater community in which we live. Many of these groups are funded by grants or as part of education institution initiatives. These groups, with paid full time staff, are able to conduct successful outreach programs for our community in a way that the Task Force would never be able to do.
We invite you to attend our Annual Meeting on Wednesday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church (Dewitt Park) in Ithaca (309 N. Cayuga St.). During this meeting we will discuss the future of the Ithaca LGBT Task Force, including whether a group like ours is still needed. Among the options for the future that the Ithaca LGBT Task Force Board of Directors will consider are:
- Dissolve the organization
- Change the organization's mission, to perhaps holding occasional meetings for informal discussions on current events or other topics of interest to the LGBT community
- Keep the organization's mission, but move to an "inactive" or "as needed" state, with meetings held less frequently
- Other options from the public will be heard and considered
At the most recent board meeting the Ithaca LGBT Task Force Board of Directors opted, for now, to keep the organization's mission, but to move to an "inactive" or "as needed" state. However, before fully implementing this decision, we want to hear from the public. We ask that you attend our Annual Meeting and provide us with your feedback or ideas. If you are unable to attend the meeting, but still wish for your thoughts to be heard and considered by the Ithaca LGBT Task Force Board, you may do so along with your vote for the Board of Directors or by sending us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
